N.A. Krinichnaya. Rivalry between rivers as an impetus for transformation of the landscape and the society (based on etiological myths) // Transactions of Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Science. No 4. Humanitarian studies. Vol.3. 2012. Pp. 50-56
Keywords: etiological world, personification of a river, competition, movement, vital force, landscape, transformation of the universe.
The paper deals with the images of personified rivers which compete in running/flowing. The movement, perceived as the river's principal attribute, is responsible for its spread in time and space. The affluent vital force emanating from the dominant river is beneficial for the universe. In those etiological worlds the collisions related to the river/road/fate account for the genesis of the distinctive features of the river landscape: the channel, rapids, tributaries, branches, configuration of the banks.
