The taxonomic structure of attached algal communities in 19 rivers in the Green Belt of Fennoscandia along the Russian-Finnish border was described using the results of long-term studies. The species compositions and relative species abundance are compared; the role of supraspecific taxa in the formation of attached algal communities is evaluated. The patterns in the phytoperiphyton spatial dynamics related to the geographical position and river catchment morphometry are discussed
