Formation of the ethnic map and spatial-administrative borders of Karelia at the turn of the 2nd millennium (Novgorod times) is considered through the prism of socio-cultural landscapes of Northwest Russia. Location on the border between the Western and the Eastern worlds, the natural, political and economic factors have shaped the peculiar culture and mentality of the traditional population of Karelia. As the interdisciplinary study has demonstrated, Medieval ethno-cultural boundaries had established long before there appeared official administrative and national borders.
