Drawing upon toponymic materials we reconstruct the boundaries of the historic Vepsian ethnic range. The natural (landscape, climate, soils) and cultural (horticulture, local and transit boating-and-portage routes, contacts with neighbour ethnic groups) causes of the boundary formation are identified.
