The article is based on a case study. It concerns the collective death of workers at a mine in the Town of Kirovsk, Murmansk Region, in 2008. Some questions related to the status of death are considered, and the division of the dead into heroes, perpetrators or victims is discussed. The case reveals some pressing problems of life and social well-being of people in Northern mono-industrial communities.
