The article describes an original method of measuring economic space transformation by comparing the characteristics of groups of regions differing utterly in the level of innovations. To implement the method we designed the algorithm and several rules, as well as the mathematical instruments for measuring the transformation of the economic space under the influence of the region’s innovative development. We suggest a system of indicators representing various characteristics of the regions to check the operability and effectiveness of the method. The results of trial application of the method to 80 Russian regions and EU members countries are reported.
