The paper concerns traditional and innovative approaches to the study of archeological ceramics using the example of wheelthrown pottery from medieval Karelian hillforts. The pottery was systematized using the comparative typology method, and the technical and technological analysis of the ceramics was set within the framework of the culturalhistorical approach. Methods of natural sciences (SEM and ICPMS analyses) were employed to carry out the qualitative research of the pottery technology, identify imported vessels and determine clay sources.
