Development of general theory of ecosystem organisation requires new methods of data collection and analysis. The most adequate source of information of forest cover for landscape-ecological research is multyspectral satellite images classified using ground truth data. In GIS describing in the paper ground truth is the data of landscape research have been carried out over the whole Russian Karelia. "Output" of the system is the maps of landscape structure for all hierarchical levels. This maps are useful for development of the regional landscape classification and various kinds of researches. Because wide range of environmental characteristics are very closely correlate with the type of the landscape, connecting these attributes to the landscape map can bring out new level of its understanding. GIS is open system and its evolution
goes to the following directions: a) spatial enhancement on sub-landscape levels, b) qualitative saturation by the data of new field research and c) broadening the field of application in science and nature management.
