The photoperiod and temperature sensitivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the North-West of Russia // Transactions of Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Science. No 5. Experimental biology. 2014. Pp. 123-132
Keywords: common beans, photoperiod, air temperature, photoperiodic sensitivity, “days of sprouting to days of flowering” period.
98 samples of common beans from the Vavilov Institute collection have been screened for photoperiod sensitivity in the Leningrad region. Most of the samples delayed flowering in a longday, compared to a shortday mode, by an average of 4.5 days in five years. The coefficient of photoperiod sensitivity (CPS) was determined. It was calculated as the longday/shortday ratio for the “sprouting to flowering” period. According to the CPS value (0.97–2.11), the varieties with almost neutral reaction to photoperiod dominated among the chosen samples. It was shown that the phase of flowering began after the accumulation of certain sums of effective temperatures (Тэф15). A significant delay in flowering (10.5 days) on long days in cooler years, compared to warmer ones, was detected. It suggests that the temperature factor is of critical importance for the induction of flowering of common beans in the NorthWest of Russia.
