A new system of phytogeographic zoning based on the characteristics of the species distribution, landscape and climate was suggested for Northwest Russia (Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions).
The territory is situated in the south-boreal and hemiboreal zones separated by the northern limit of oak and some species of its suite. It belongs to the oceanic sector with strong continental influence and three subsectors recognized within it (a more detailed version of the "Finnish" phytogeographic system), and by little part – to the oceanic-continental sector. Depending on the presence of characteristic (mainly forest, especially thermophilous) species and landscape peculiarities, 21 district (with some sub-districts) has been distinguished. Brief descriptions of the landscape features and floristic peculiarities of the districts are provided. These districts may be further grouped into large-scale provinces, like Fennoscandia, Baltic region, etc., with intermediate areas between them. The proposed scheme is a development of the ideas set forth by N. A. Miniaev and N. N. Tsvelev.
