Keywords: phytoparasitic nematode Globodera rostochiensis; pest management; resistant and susceptible potato varieties; sodium lignosulfonates; short-term low-temperature treatment
Modern management methods of potato cyst-forming nematode Globoderarostochiensis (Wollenweber, 1923) Behrens, 1975were tested in field conditions. All methods have shown the effectiveness of clearing the soil from cysts to varying degrees. The study was conducted on the territory of Kizhi Island (Medvezhyegorsky District,Republic of Karelia). High efficiency of cultivating a nematode-resistant potato variety was revealed; nematicidal properties of sodium lignosulfonates, a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, were confirmed; and the role of pre-planting low-temperature treatment of seed tubers of susceptible to the nematode potato variety to increase the non-specific resistance of plants was determined. It has been shown that the effect of the studied regulators of the nematode population density is manifested in a decrease in the number and an increase in the proportion of small cysts in the nematode population. It has been established that their use in combination is most effective: it is first recommended to cultivate nematode-resistant potato varieties; then, to input sodium lignosulfonates into the soil and use temperature-treated seed potato tubers. The use of such complex ensures a stable potato yield when cultivating the crop on infected soils. There was revealed a tendency towards gradual clearing of the soil from the pest (reduction in the number of cysts) over the next 5 years, caused by the use of crop rotation in the potato field and disruption of the phytoparasite life-cycle after the use of methods for regulating the number of potato cyst nematode.
