The ubiquity of organohalides as a natural component of organic matter, as well as the long-term use of industrial organohalides have resulted in the accumulation of these compounds in all spheres of the Earth. This paper presents the results of reconnaissance surveys for the content of organohalides in lakes located in the subarctic climatic zone of the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk Regions. The metric for the content of organohalides in natural water was the concentration of adsorbable organically bound halogens (AOX). Analysis of the data from the reconnaissance surveys showed that the adsorbable organohalide concentrations were specific to each individual water body. The average AOX concentrations in freshwater lakes directly influenced by the marine environment ranged from 0.048 ± 0.008 to 0.231 ± 0.023 mg/dm3. The lowest value was recorded in the freshwater Lake Bannoe/Malye Khruslomeny on Oleniy Island (Gulf of Kandalaksha), and the highest – in Lake Maloe Kamennoe. The AOX concentration in the meromictic Lake Myortvoe on Bolshoy Solovetsky Island did not exceed 0.138 ± 0.014 mg/dm3. A comparison of the results for freshwater lakes situated at different distances from the White Sea showed that the average AOX concentrations in lakes under immediate marine influence were three or more times higher than in lakes located farther away from the sea.
