Некоторые особенности островной группировки лося Alces alces L. Соловецкого архипелага

The article presents the initial results of a study of the island population of the moose Alces alces L. on the Solovetsky Archipelago – a compact group of islands in the White Sea. The first data on the distribution of moose on Bolshoy Solovetsky Island during the summer and winter periods, as well as estimates of the population size, are discussed. Based on hoofprint measurements and animal encounters, the age characteristics of the population are determined. As of July 2025, approximately 30 % of the population consisted of young, immature individuals. The results indicate a higher moose density in the study area compared to the mainland part of the Arkhangelsk Region and a potential negative impact on forest vegetation. Currently, significant suppression is observed in a number of deciduous tree species, such as rowan and aspen, which are the primary food sources for moose. The possible impact of moose on the archipelago’s forest-mire ecosystems is discussed. The studies revealed a large moose population size, at least 89 individuals as estimated by various methods, with a population density of approximately 5 individuals per 10 sq. km, which is several times that of the average in the mainland Arkhangelsk Region. A distinctive feature of the moose winter distribution is the presence of a sedentary group around the village of Solovetsky, near residential buildings, suggesting the animals are not persecuted by humans. Moose densities vary among areas in both winter and summer. The most visited places by animals on Bolshoy Solovetsky Island are highlighted. Monitoring is necessary to study the species’ population trends on the archipelago.
