The paper discusses the results of surveys in the residential areas of the city of Petrozavodsk loeated in the mid-taiga subzone. The main factors responsible for the species composition and structure of plant communities have been revealed. Data on the distribution of plant communities across areas built up at various periods of time are given. Three groups of communities were singled out by analysing the combination of the dominant species. Some general tendencies in the formation of the plant cover in an urban area were identified.
