Out of the 46 Cyclostomata and fish species (not counting fish from fish-farms and accidental colonizers) that inhabit Karelia's freshwater bodies, 17 species and forms, belonging to 5 orders, 8 families and 15 genera, are described in the second edition of the Red Data Book. New data on their distribution and biology are presented. Based on critical analysis of extensive literature, some inaccuracies in marking of the boundaries of distribution areas and discrepancies in estimation of the abundances of some species were revealed. All fish species with a protection status of a higher than regional rank are listed.
