Keywords: freshwater pearl mussel, glochidia, rivers, timber rafting, salmonids.
Data are presented on the distribution and state of populations of the rare species, freshwater pearl mussel, in rivers of Karelia. The rivers were surveyed for the state of Atlantic salmon populations and infection of its juveniles with pearl mussel glochidia. It is demonstrated that timber rafting, hydropower construction and salmon decline has resulted in extinction of pearl mussel populations from some rivers. The demand is stressed for organization of studies of the present-day condition of salmon rivers in Karelia to assess the status of the surviving pearl mussel populations.
