Mid-scale maps of peat deposits and mire vegetation of Karelia were for the first time systematized and presented in GIS environment. They were derived from the multidimensional database describing 2 600 000 hectares of peatland. To accurately determine the size of the mires the data were additionally digitized from recent satellite images in 10 x 10 km squares, whereupon they were divided into districts. As the result, the paludification degree and carbon pool of the territory were re-estimated.
