In the conditions of prolonged atmospheric drought the СО2 gas exchange of seedlings of silver birch (Betula pendula) and Karelian birch (Betula pendula var. сarelica) was investigated at different soil water contents. When the amount of soil moisture was sufficient, reliable differences between the СО2 gas exchange of young and mature leaves were found in seedlings of silver birch and Karelia birch. In the situation of water stress, photosynthesis dropped on average 12 times in mature leaves and 7.5 times in young leaves. No statistically significant differences were found in the respiration rates either under normal conditions or at water stress.
