We investigated the activity of basic lysosomal proteinases (cathepsins D & B) in organs of pike (Esox lucius L.) from lakes exposed to different degrees of human pressure. The results evidence that cathepsins play a part in enacting the lysosomes' protective function in the fish in response to elevated concentrations of lithium, potassium, accompanying anions, shift in pH, and sediment detachment in the tailings dump of the mining and ore concentration mill.
