The quantitative assessment of accumulation and transformation of organic substances and nutrients in lake sediments was carried out through comparative analysis of data on 100 lakes of Karelia. We found that accumulation of organic matter and nitrogen in the sediments agrees with the trophic status of the lake, and naturally increases from the oligotrophic to the eutrophic type, whereas no differences were observed in the distribution of phosphorus. Oxygen absorption by sediments and the intensity of the flux at the water-sediments boundary depends on the trophic status of the lake.
