N.A. Krinichnaya. The ceiling: manifestations of the top boundary of the living space in the peasant microcosm (based on folk art) // Transactions of Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Science. No 4. Humanitarian studies. 2011. Pp. 29-36
Keywords: mythological worldview, verbal art, visual arts, model of the Universe, tiers, boundary, cosmological ideas, personification, archetype, reproduction
In mythological views the ceiling is perceived not only as the boundary between worlds, first of all between the upper and middle (living) tiers of the peasant microcosm, but also as the «limit» of the human's presence in «this world». The ceiling and its component parts are cosmologized, animated, personified. To distinguish the symbolic signs embraced in the folklore5architectural image and encoded in various kinds of folk art we undertook a comprehensive study of the image. As the result, the «ceiling» concept was found to occupy a special position in the system of ideas about life, death and fate.
