Topical problems of folklore text studies involved in the preparation of collected volumes of Russian oral folklore, first of all the epic, for publication are considered. V. Bakhtina shared the observations she made during the effort-consuming work with the archival materials from the expedition “In the footsteps of Rybnikov and Hilferding”. The discrepant records by different collectors of the same text they listened to together, the technique of recording in the field, which implies that so-called “double layer” recording is used in addition to the common manual recording by a team of collectors, as well as the problems of recording contaminated texts are considered.
