Available data on records of the most notable insect species from Karelia during the I900's is briefly analyzed. Three groups of insects with different trends in population changes were revealed: (1) species which has been clearly declined: saproxylic beetles appear to require extensive old growth coniferous, particularly pine forests and species depending of traditional farming which has gradually ceased, (2) species which number has been increased: beetles, associated with deciduous trees, and immigrant pest species, and (3) species characterized with fluctuations in appearance, e. g. Aromia moshata, Vespa crabro, Keroplatus tipuloides, the reasons of which are not known.
