The vitamins A (retinol) and E (α-tocopherol) concentration in the cortical and medullar kidney layers of mammals (rat, mink, polar fox, fox) was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Vitamin A concentration in the renal cortex of all animals was significantly higher than in the renal medulla. Both renal layers of the carnivorous mammals were characterized by a higher vitamin A concentration than rat kidneys. No clear differences between layers in tocopherol distribution were detected, but tocopherol concentration in both renal layers was high in all studied species of mammals.
